Some scholars have argued that early medieval universities were influenced by the religious Madrasah schools in Al-Andalus , the Emirate of Sicily , and the Middle East (during the Crusades ). Richard Vedder, an Ohio University professor and member of the Commission on the Future of Higher Education , has been a critic of how institutions of higher education, including the universities, are financed. Concern over the political bias among university faculty has long been a criticism of the university setting.
