Ethelbald de Wessex nasceu em 834, sendo o segundo dos filhos homens de um total de 6 de Ethelwulf, rei de Wessex e de sua primeira esposa, Osburga.
A morte de seu irmão mais velho, Athelstan (851) o converteu em herdeiro da coroa.
Quando seu pai partiu em peregrinação a Roma junto com seu filho mais novo, Alfredo, depois da morte de sua esposa (855), Ethelbald aproveitou sua ausência para destroná-lo e assumir o controle de Wessex; mas quando seu pai retorna em 856, poderia depô-lo facilmente e retomar o controle do reino, ao invés disto, Ethewulf permite que Ehtelbald realmente assuma o trono.
Com a morte do pai em 13 de janeiro de 858, Ethelbald casa-se com sua madrasta, a segunda esposa de seu pai, Judith, em fevereiro de 858. Desta união, nasceu um filho, Archibald, o Jovem, mas o matrimônio foi considerado incestuoso e escandalizou a população de Wessex. Ethelbald foi obrigado a separar-se de Judith, pela influência do bispo de Winchester. Finalmente, o matrimônio foi anulado pouco antes de sua morte em 860.
Ethelbald morreu sendo impopular em 20 de dezembro de 860, aos 26 anos de idade, sendo sepultado na abadía de Sherborne, em Dorset.
Ethelbert, seu irmão, lhe sucedeu ao trono.
