By the second century bc and perhaps earlier, the Classical world had become aware of large tribal groupings in northern Europe, north and east of the Celts, extending from the Rhine to the Vistula and from southern Scandinavia to the Danube. The great migrations of peoples from the late fourth century to the seventh century framed a period of transformation in Europe, accompanying and contributing to the collapse of the western Roman Empire. The most successful and enduring of Germanic kingdoms were those of the Ostrogoths in Italy, the Visigoths in Spain, and the Franks in Gaul.
